Abstract
Two Libyan strains of A. sterilis L. and 2 cultivars of A. sativa L. were grown at 3 levels of available N and at 2 temperatures in controlled-environment rooms. The strains of A. sterilis produced groats with protein concentrations significantly greater than those of the cultivars of A. sativa under all N and temperature conditions. One strain produced straw with a greater N concentration, but because of a low harvest index, it did not have a higher concentration of N in the entire shoot. The other strain apparently synthesized groat protein faster than the A. sativa cultivars during the early stage of grain development and was considered to have potential as a donor of genes for the improvement of protein content in cultivated oats. Both strains of A. sterilis had shorter grain-filling periods than the cultivars of A. sativa. This publication has 16 references indexed in Scilit:
