Abstract
In vitro sensitivity in Dubos-Davis medium of the tubercle bacilli isolated from sputa or gastric contents was detd. in 16 patients with pulmonary tuberculosis receiving 1.8 g. of streptomycin daily for 4 mos. In all 16, strains isolated prior to treatment were highly sensitive to streptomycin. Loss of sensitivity (10-fold increase in resistance)began to appear by the end of the 1st mo. of therapy together with conversion of positive sputum or gastric washings. By the 3rd or 4th mo., cultures were positive in only 9 of the 16 cases. 5 of these 9 strains developed a 10- to 50-fold increase in resistance; the remaining 4 strains developed a 100 to greater than 2,000-fold increase in resistance. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
