Abstract
The validity of writing the theory of the cooperative Jahn-Teller effect in terms of a symmetric combination of the single site Jahn-Teller operators, from one unit cell, is examined. It is found that the self-energy correction should be reevaluated and that extra care must be taken in theories of fluctuations. Keywords
