Abstract
This discussion can be summarized by one question: is the virilism of the adrenogenital syndrome induced by an excess of 17-alpha-hydroxyprogesterone, as postulated by Jailer and associates or is it induced by an excess of unidentified androgenic adrenal steroids, as proposed by Bartter and associates? Dorf-man has suggested that the masculinization results from large amounts of C-19 androgens (such as [DELTA]4-androstene, 3,17-dione) which are synthesized by the adrenal glands from acetate or cholesterol but not by way of the C-21 precursors (such as 17-alpha-hydroxyprogesterone). One of the important steps in answering this question is to determine whether or not 17-alpha-hydroxy- progesterone is a biologically active androgen when given paren-terally in man.
