Abstract
Gelfoam implants were placed in the oval windows of 10 squirrel monkeys following stapedectomy. The absorption of the gelfoam as well as the formation of surface membranes and fibrous tissue was studied as a function of time after surgery. A membrane on the vestibular surface of the gelfoam was not present on the 4th day but did exist on the 7th day after surgery. The gelfoam was resorbed and replaced by a layer of fibrous tissue by the end of 2 weeks. The fibrous tissue membrane became thinner during the subsequent 6 months. Evidence of mild labyrinthitis was present on the 3rd post-operative day but disappeared by the end of one week. Serofibrinous labyrinthitis with permanent morphological changes occurred in 2 ears. In squirrel monkeys, gelfoam provides only a mechanical seal of the oval window for the first 4 days after stapedectomy, but subsequently a thin fibrous membrane similar to the round window membrane in thickness, seals the oval window. This publication has 16 references indexed in Scilit:
