Abstract
Augmentation of the granular cell index in the rat juxtaglomerular apparatus by either short or prolonged dietary salt restriction was prevented by one injection of reserpine or by four injections of norepinephrine administered at the onset of salt restriction. Four subcutaneous injections of norepinephrine reduced low salt elevated GCI when given after twenty-nine days of low salt intake but failed to reduce the elevated granular cell index of adrenalectomized, cortisone or salt supported rats. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that the granularity of juxtaglomerular cells is inversely related to the mineralo-corticoid level. Keywords
