Abstract
The new differential equation for the statistical atom is derived and discussed in detail. Numerical results are presented which provide evidence for the validity of all approximations that have entered the formalism. A comparison of experimental data for diamagnetic susceptibilities with theoretical predictions shows that the new statistical atom significantly surpasses its Hartree-Fock competitor. Keywords
