Autocorrelation of Transmittance of Holograms Made of Diffuse Objects

Abstract
A general expression for the autocorrelation function of the transmittance of Fresnel holograms made of diffuse objects, recorded on fine grain emulsions, is obtained. The expression is general in the sense that the irradiances of reference and object, the type of the hologram, and the nature of the recording medium's non-linearity are taken to be arbitrary. The effect of the non-linearity is shown to be the generation of higher-order terms for each individual term in the input exposure. This expression predicts distorted multiple images. While the multiplicity of the images is due to the generation higher harmonics, the distortions are partly due to the multiplicity of these harmonics. The first harmonic predicts a distorted version of the usual virtual and real images, their positions and their irradiance distributions.
