Abstract
Inferences are made concerning the nature and range of interatomic forces in several solids, by the use of the observed dispersion relations of the lattice vibrations together with the simple analytical properties of the sum of the squares of all the lattice vibrations corresponding to the same point in reciprocal space. Eleven metals, one alloy, and four semiconductors are treated. The method enables one to separate longrange electromagnetic (i.e., multipole) forces from "overlap" ones. The results suggest in several cases that the former are required to describe the interactions in a realistic way. Keywords
