Drinking behavior of children in Santiago, Chile.

Abstract
In 1969-1970, eighty 9 yr old students (42 of them girls) from 8 state schools and 47 students (21 of them girls) from 4 private schools in Santiago, Chile, were interviewed about their drinking, their attitudes toward drinking and their perceptions of adults'' attitudes toward drinking. The mother of each child was interviewed about family drinking habits and attitudes. In both the lower social class (students in state schools) and higher social class (students in private schools), 80% of the children had consumed alcohol, usually a beverage that was sweet and of low alcohol content; 28% of the total sample drank once a week and 9% drank everyday. Approximately half of the children of both social classes drank in the home; and 3 times as many girls as boys in both social classes were abstainers.
