Mapping of the staggered magnetization in a finite spin-1 antiferromagnetic chain: ^{89}Y NMR in Y_2BaNi_{1-x}Mg_xO_5
Abstract
^{89}Y NMR spectra in Y_2BaNi_{1-x}Mg_xO_5 are used to map the expectation values of the local magnetic moments along a finite S=1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain. We find an exponentially decaying staggered magnetization at the chain boundaries, with a characteristic decay distance, deduced in the temperature range 100K \lesssim T \lesssim 285K = J (the superexchange coupling constant), equal to the theoretical prediction for the correlation length of an infinite chain. The polarization of the edge magnetic moments is found to differ from the bulk magnetization for a Curie-like term corresponding to S=1/2 spins. Keywords
