NUSSBAUM'S EXPERIMENT ON RENAL SECRETION

Abstract
The observations originally made by Nuss-baum on Rana esculenta and confirmed by Bainbridge and Beddard on R. temporaria, are confirmed for R. cates-biana. Ligation of all the renal arteries results in a cessation of urine flow. Inj. of urea after ligation of all the renal arteries results in a resumption of urine elimination. Contrary to the belief of these investigators the excretion of urine under these conditions is the result of continued glomerular circulation. This is made possible by collateral circulation which is established immediately upon ligation, but which becomes vigorous only after the injection of urea produces a dilatation of certain vessels. If this collateral circulation is interrupted with additional ligatures urine formation cannot be detected in spite of urea injections. Open glomeruli cannot be detected reliably by injecting the kidney with dye. The elimination of urine after ligation of the renal arteries as described by Nuss-baum and by Bainbridge and Beddard evidently was not due to tubular activity.
