Abstract
Renal excretion of K was studied by clearance technics in dogs during diuresis produced by water admd. orally or by infusions of isotonic NaCl, hypertonic NaCl, and urea (50%). The rate of K excretion was unrelated to the plasma concn., filtered load, minute urine volume, or rate of Na or chloride excretion. K clearance was correlated to the state of cellular hydration, being minimal during water diuresis and in excess of filtration rate during extreme cellular dehydration. Increased rates of excretion resulting from dehydration were inhibited by mercurial diuretics. The results are discussed in relation to chronic dehydration and indicate that tubular secretion of K is a response to dehydration. Keywords
