Abstract
The sebum of the guinea pig, mouse, rabbit and rat, was examined and the usefulness of these animals for experimental studies on sebum metabolism assessed. Marked differences in the composition of the sebum of the 4 animals were demonstrated. The composition varied also from that of man and sheep. The presence of latho-sterol (cholest-7-en-3[beta]-ol), however, appears characteristic of the sebum of the species of this family. A 4th group of long-chain aliphatic compounds, alkane-l:2-diols, was established as a common constituent of sebum. Keywords
