The Biological Assay of Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6)

Abstract
A diet and supplements suitable for pyridoxine assay by means of growth of the rat have been described. Tests showed that the supplement selected, consisting entirely of pure vitamins except for biotin, was adequate for the purpose. Symptoms of the rats are shown to be specific for pyridoxine deficiency, the tail lesions being somewhat unique. The dose response curves for males and for females are found to be linear from doses of 1 μg. to 8 μg. when the logarithm of the dose is plotted against the response expressed as gain in weight in 4 weeks; the slope of the curve for females is slightly less than that for males. Details of the arrangement of the assay and a method of analysis of results to find potency and error are suggested.
