The Effects of Damage to the Organ of Corti and the Stria Vascularis on Endolymphatic Cationic Changes

Abstract
In vivo measurement of the cochlear microphonics and endolymphatic direct current potentials and monitoring of the endolymphatic Na+and K+changes with intense acoustical stimulation were performed in guinea pigs injected with arsacetin. Arsacetin causes destructive changes in the elements of the cochlear duct. Frequent alterations of the cochlear microphonics and organ of Corti and infrequent alterations of the endolymphatic direct current potential and stria vascularis were observed. The usual endolymphatic cationic changes with intense acoustical stimulation were reduced in the study of animals. The site of the phenomena of endolymphatic cationic changes with intense acoustical stimulation was not definitely established. Evidence is presented that the integrity of the organ of Corti must be preserved for the usual cationic phenomena to occur.
