Abstract
The findings in 61 male cases of bubonic lymphogranuloma venereum treated in the Seamen''s Hospital in London between 1950 and 1957, are presented. In only 4 cases were transitory primary lesions detected. The incubation period of the bubo averaged 5 weeks. Unilateral inguinal node involvement was seen twice as often as bilateral. The majority of the infections were sustained in the West Indies, Bermuda, Cuba, South America, India, and the Far East. Clinical response was satisfactory in 51 of the 61 patients. Most of the patients were treated with terramycin, some with sulfonamides alone, some with sulfonamides and aureomycin, and some with aureo-mycin alone. The authors recommend two 10-day courses of broad spectrum antibiotic, each course consisting of 20 g in 10 days with a rest period of 7 days between courses. In 40% of the patients treated by this method, the lymphogranuloma complement fixation test was reversed to negative. Keywords
