Abstract
White Leghorn hens laying at the onset of the experiments were starved for 7-9 days, during which time the birds received daily intramuscular injections of one of several gonadotropins. Such hens rarely ovulated after the 2d day of treatment. However, ovulation in fasting hens so treated for 7-8 days was induced by a single intravenous injection of a luteinizing hormone (LH) preparation. One tenth mg of the LH preparation used was close to the minimally effective dosage. About 8 hours elapsed between LH injection and follicular rupture. It was not possible to induce ovulation of immature follicles (about ca. 2 cm in diameter) by intravenous injection of as much as 2 mg of the LH preparation. Keywords
