Induction of Somatic Antigen 1 by Bacteriophage in Salmonella B Group

Abstract
In Salmonella B group several kinds of symbiotic phage are demonstrated, of which the iota phage governs the production of somatic antigen 1. When a strain without antigen 1 acquires lysogenicity by the infection with this phage, antigen 1 is produced in it. Consequently, it was considered to demonstrate that the symbiotic phage itself governs the genetic properties of the bacterium similarly as in the case of the antigenic transformation from 3, 10 to 3, 15 in Salmonella E group (Iseki and Sakai, 1953) and of toxin production in Corynebacterium dyphtheriae (Freeman, 1951).
