Abstract
The magnetic structures of three Gd-Y alloys (Y concentrations of 29.7, 30.4 and 31.1 at.%) have been investigated by neutron diffraction. All order initially in a structure with spontaneous magnetisation along the hexagonal c-axis and apparent magnetic disorder in the basal plane. As the temperature is lowered the alloy richest in Gd orders in a canted ferromagnetic structure while the other two compositions transform to basal-plane helical antiferromagnetic structures before finally ordering as canted ferromagnets. Keywords
