Cultivation of Lansing Poliomyelitis Virus in Tissue Culture. II. Utilization of Glucose in Synthetic Medium.

Abstract
Propagation of the Lansing strain of poliomyelitis has been demonstrated in cultures of human embryonic brain and cord. The source of nutriment was a synthetic medium, mixture 199, devised by Morgan, Morton and Parker. A comparison of this medium with Hanks-Simms medium indicated a longer period of cell survival when the former medium was used. Studies on glucose utilization of control and infected tissue cultures indicated a lower level of glucose metabolism in cultures containing the poliomyelitis virus than in uninfected controls. Glucose utilization studies may be a more sensitive indication of the metabolic state of the cell than visual detns. of pH values of cultures.
