Abstract
A simple medium is described for the isolation of members of the genus Veillonella. The composition of the medium was trypti-case (BBL), 5 g; yeast extract (Difco), 3 g; sodium thioglycollate, 750 mg; basic fuchsin, 0.002 g; Tween 80, 1 g; sodium lactate (50%), 25.0 ml; agar, 15 g; distilled water: 11, pH adjusted to 7.5. Streptomycin sulfate was added separately to the plates at 5 [mu]g/ml. The basic fuchsin was calculated on the basis of 100% composition. The medium was highly selective for the genus Veillonella in oral samples from man and the rat. Colonies of extraneous organisms, chiefly certain streptococci and diphtheroid-like organisms, were easily differentiated from those of the Veillonella. It was estimated that the mean oral populations in man and the rat are in the same order of magnitude as the streptococci.
