Oral Propionyl Erythromycin in Treating Early Syphilis

Abstract
Oral propionyl-erythromycin was used in the treatment of patients with darkfield-posi-tive early syphilis. Minor gastrointestinal disturbances occurred infrequently. Ten g of erythromycin administered in a period of 8 to 10 days was inadequate. There was no significant difference between 15 g and 20 g given in a 10-day period. The two higher dosage schedules showed a retreatment rate in secondary syphilis of 12.5% as compared with 48% for the 10 g schedule. Erythromycin was more effective in the treatment of females than males, probably because of greater adherence to the prescribed schedule.
