The glyoxalase activity of tissues

Abstract
An investigation of the glyoxalase activity of tissue-slices showed that diffusion of the substrate (methylglyoxal) into the slices limits the rate of reaction. Glyoxalase action was proportional to the surface areas of tissue-slices, not to their weights. The rate depended not only on the intrinsic glyoxalase activity of the tissue, but also on the conc. of the substrate and its diffusion coeff. in the tissue. The glyoxalase activity of tissues was greater than had been hitherto supposed. Possibly methylglyoxal and glucose compete as substrates in the production of lactic acid. Oxygen had a partial inhibitory effect on glyoxalase activity in most tissues. Glyoxalase action was discussed in relation to its possible role as a final stage in glycolysis.
