Abstract
Burgess studied 250 female contacts of males suffering from non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU). Sixty-seven percent of these female contacts showed polymorphonuclear leucocytes in wet films or stained smears, which the author interprets as evidence of an inflammatory process. On the basis of the clinical diagnoses in these female contacts, the author feels there are 3 main groups of NGU which are approximately equal in numbers: (1). Those due to venereally acquired trichomoniasis and moniliasis. (2). Those which stem from endocervicitis or cervical erosions, which the author feels are probably of infective origin, possibly viral. (3). A non-venereal group including cases of NGU due to ingestion of foods and drugs, use of chemical contraceptives or trauma to the urethral mucosa.
