Abstract
Presentation of Case First admission. A 52-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of a question of herpes simplex encephalitis.She was well until four weeks previously, when she became ataxic, with slurred speech. Fatigue, somnolence, and vomiting developed, and several days later she was taken to another hospital. Physical examination showed that the temperature was 35°C, and the blood pressure was 160/100 mm Hg. Ataxia and left facial weakness were found, with profuse diaphoresis. X-ray films of the skull and a computed tomographic (CT) scan of the brain were normal. A lumbar puncture showed normal cerebrospinal fluid. . . .
