Superluminal travel and the weak energy condition
Abstract
I investigate the relationship between faster-than-light travel and weak energy condition violation. In a general spacetime it is difficult to specify what one means by faster-than-light travel, and I give an example of a metric which appears to allow superluminal travel, but in fact is just flat space. However, if one starts from Minkowski space, and makes a local modification, then the problem is well-defined. In this case I prove that the spacetime must either contain a singularity or violate the weak energy condition. Keywords
