THE ESSENTIAL NATURE OF PANTOTHENIC ACID AND ANOTHER ALKALI LABILE FACTOR IN THE NUTRITION OF THE DOG

Abstract
Dogs on a synthetic ration supplemented with synthetic thiamin, riboflavin, nicotinic acid, and vit. B6 developed an acute deficiency characterized by anorexia and loss of wt. The adm. of pantothenic acid concentrate produced an immediate remission of symptoms but the animals eventually failed to respond to it even when supplemented with a growth promoting fraction of liver extract which had been treated with alkali. Recovery was always obtained with whole liver extract. Young puppies receiving an acid ether residue of liver extract or 4% molasses did not survive even with the addition of pantothenic acid. Growth plateau occurred with the acid ether extract alone. Resumption of growth was obtained when the residue or the alkali treated residue replaced the extract. In addition to the alkali stable factor W, pantothenic acid and another alkali labile factor are essential.
