Effect of adrenergic blockade on consequences of sustained epinephrine infusion.

Abstract
A 3-hr infusion of .65-5.00 [mu]g/kg per min (base) of epinephrine bitartarate (E) was administered in intact (A), phenoxybenzamine- (B) and phenoxybenzamine + propranolol (C) premedicated sheep. The immediate response in A was similar to that described for other species. In B the response was determined by [beta]-adrenergic effects and in C the response was virtually absent. Ventilatory stimulant action of E was parallel to its effect on metabolite rate both in intact and in premedicated sheep. Twenty-four hours later A and B were found hypotensive. Blood and plasma volumes were normal and there was no evidence of myocardial failure. C remained normotensive provided they were given steroids during the night. Relationship of post-E to posthemorrhagic shock is discussed.
