Absorption and Excretion of Streptomycin Para-aminosalicylate.

Abstract
Chemical measurements of para-aminosalicylic acid (PAS) and bioassay of streptomycin concns. were made on the plasma and urine of human subjects following intramusc. injn. of streptomycin p-aminosalicylate. The plasma concns. of streptomycin were similar to those expected from an equivalent amt. of streptomycin sulfate. PAS appeared promptly in the plasma in significant concns. which fell rapidly to the base line at 4 hrs. following injn. While chemical assay for PAS and bioassay for streptomycin gave virtually identical recoveries in vitro, this correlation did not hold in the plasma of subjects. This dissociation is believed to be due to rapid conjugation of the PAS radical. Urinary recovery of streptomycin averaged 60% and recovery of free PAS averaged 14%,.
