Abstract
With SO4 and Cl as the anionic species mixed in a 1:1 equivalent ratio, Al precipitated in the presence of montmorillonite gave a complex having a basal spacing of 25 A after glycerol solvation with several higher orders. The precipitated Al had an aluminum hydroxy sulfate composition and was at least partially in the interlayer of the montmorillonite. After a period of time, basaluminite, crystalline Al4(OH)10SO4, was formed and increased linearly with time as the SO4 in solution and the interlayer hydroxy aluminum decreased. The ion product (Al)(OH)2.5(SO4)0.25 decreased gradually with time and reached 10−29.37, the solubility product of basaluminite. The reactions were similar at several levels of precipitated Al, but the rates decreased with increasing amounts of added Al.Keywords
