Heparin Resistance (Measured by the Heparin Thrombin Time) and Plasma Fibrinogen in Various Diseases

Abstract
The heparin thrombin time was investigated in 144 patients. In 27 (73%) out of 37 patients with malignant tumours or thrombo-embolic diseases it was shortened. Out of the remaining 107 patients suffering from other diseases, including 40 with arteriosclerotic heart disease and/or other arteriosclerosis without thromboembolic complications, 26(24%) had a shortened heparin thrombin time. In 70 patients plasma fibrinogen was determined simultaneously. This revealed a certain correlation between the increase of fibrinogen and the shortening of the heparin thrombin time. However, there were divergences, both in the form of a greatly shortened heparin thrombin time coexisting with a normal fibrinogen and in the form of a normal heparin thrombin time coexisting with a highly increased fibrinogen.
