Abstract
A mechanical aspirator, designed for use under a stereoscopic microscope for rapid sexing and transfer of eye gnats, Hippelates pusio, to cages, is described. It consists of 4 principal parts: A base containing the vacuum source and accessories, an anesthetization chamber, a collection chamber mounted on a wooden support, and a suction gun. The fan motor is driven by two 1-1/2-volt, size D dry cell batteries. The operator can sex and cage about 1000 gnats/hr. with no mortality or observable harmful effects if the gnats are exposed to CO2 for periods no longer than 20 min. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
