Tioconazole cream proved significantly more effective than the vehicle, both clinically (p<0.001) and mycologically (p<0.001); 14 out of the 17 patients treated with tioconazole cream for four weeks were cured mycologically (82.4%).Seventeen of the vehicle treated patients were later taken into an open study where they were treated with tioconazole cream. Sixteen were cured mycologically (94.1%) and one patient was clinically cured but mycologically still infected. At a follow‐up 6 weeks after the completion of treatment, 34 patients were reviewed, and 27 (79 %) were clinically and mycologically free of infection. Trichophyton rubrum was cultured in 3 patients; 4 patients were mycologically cured but showed still some clinical signs. One patient with previous contact sensitivities developed an allergic reaction to tioconazole. Otherwise the creams were well tolerated and there was no staining of skin or clothing. There were no drug related abnormalities in the laboratory tests.
