Abstract
A technique is described for the isolation of various spp. of Spirillum and Vibrio. Agar colonies are initiated from cells planted in droplets of diluted liquid infusion blown out of a capillary pipette and scattered over the agar surface. After several transfers in sterilized infusion media, cultures can be carried on the usual agar slants. 4 spp. of Spirillum and 2 of Vibrio were studied in regard to their morph., routine culture characteristics, and utilization of various C and N sources in synthetic media. After a comparison with the literature, 3 of the spirilla were identified with previously descr. spp., S. undula, S. intersonii, S. serpens. A 4th, similar in certain respects to S. lipoferum of Beijerinck but not definitely the same, was descr. but not named. A rather complete bibliography on Spirillum is included. This publication has 3 references indexed in Scilit:
