Abstract
A study has been made of nearly fifty alloys and compounds of gadolinium using the 86.5 keV transition in 155Gd. In all cases the gadolinium atom was in a nominally trivalent state and an overall isomer shift range of 0.85 mm s-1 was observed. The hyperfine fields measured varied from +45.0T(GdFe2) to -36.0T(GdN) and all the observed quadrupole splittings were consistent with the site symmetry of the gadolinium atom. Detailed comparisons are given with other work in the field and explanations given for many existing discrepancies. Keywords
