Salt-Induced Dissociation of Carbonic Anhydrase from Intact Cells of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

Abstract
The extracellular carbonic anhydrase of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is dissociated from either intact or lysed cells by treatment with a 20 millimolar potassium phosphate buffer containing 0.4 molar KCl at pH 7.4. Electrophoretic analysis of proteins dissociated by the high salt treatment reveals that carbonic anhydrase comprises over 70% of the total released. These results suggest that the extracellular carbonic anhydrase in C. reinhardtii is bound to either the cell wall or plasma membrane through ionic interactions.
