Zur Kenntnis der Kohlenhydratgruppen der Mucoproteide

Abstract
N-acetyl neuraminic acid was isolated from submaxillary mucoid by column chromatography on "Lewatit MIB", using HCl as the eluant. Treatment with methanol-HCl converted it to the methoxyl derivative of neuraminic acid; treatment with alkali, to pyrrole-1-carboxylic acid. The relation of the substance to the virus-receptor of Gottschalk is duscussed. A method is also described for the isolation as the methoxyl derivative of up to 60% of the neuraminic acid demonstrable in submaxillary mucoid by color reaction.
