Investigations of the new trigonalGd3+ESR center produced in irradiated alkaline-earth fluoride crystals

Abstract
A detailed account is given of various properties of the new trigonal Gd3+ ESR center produced by x-ray irradiation in single crystals of CaF2 and SrF2 containing gadolinium ions. The fine-structure splitting of the new center is characterized (in units of 104 cm1) by b20=2905.7±0.5, b40=+12.6±0.2, b60=0±0.3, b43=547±10, b63=+30±15, b66=+11±15 in CaF2; and b20=2671.7±0.5, b40=+11.7±0.2, b60=0±0.3, b43=346±10, b63=+22±15, b66=+24±15 in SrF2. Despite extensive experimentation, the new center has not been produced in BaF2 crystals.
