Abstract
A brief review of the literature pertaining to the previously known metabolic processes of the Mycobacteria and the enzymes controlling them is given. By means of different inhibitors the endogenous respiration and the metabolism of glycerin was studied comparatively in resting as well as in proliferating INH (isonicotinic acid hydrazide)-sensi-tive and INH-resistent M. phlei. On the basis of the inhibition by fluoride, iodoacetate and arsenite not only in the endogenous but also in resting and growth respiration a reaction course corresponding to the Embden-Meyerhof scheme is to be assumed. The further degradation is still not clear. The so-called "glyoxylic acid cycle" is discussed. The participation of the citric acid cycle in uninhibited growth processes was established with certainty. The oxidative terminal stage of catalysis proceeds by way of cyanide-sensitive enzymes. The uncoupling of phosphorylation processes was especially evident in proliferating bacteria. Malonic acid showed an unexpected behavior. It was absorbed very noticeably by the bacteria as a nutrient, especially in endogenous respiration. Pyridin-3-sulfonate showed inhibitory effects in INH-sensitive and INH-resistent bacteria analogous to those of isonicotinic acid hydrazide so that a common mechanism of action can be assumed. Enzymes with thiol groups were more strongly inhibited in the sensitive variants than in those of the resistent bacteria. Further characteristic differences were evident in the phosphorylation processes and in the inhibitability of the citric acid cycle. This publication has 29 references indexed in Scilit:
