Abstract
A systematic procedure for solving the Whitham equation in a two-layer fluid of finite depth is developed. An analytic solution which asymptotically evolves into exactly two solitons is exhibited. The characteristics of these solitons can be quite different from those resulting from the Korteweg-de Vries equation (the shallow water limit of the present theory). Keywords
