Abstract
In North America snow blight of conifers previously thought to be caused by Phacidium infestans Karst. is shown to be caused by a number of fungi, several of which have been confused with P. infestans either in the literature or on collections in various herbaria. These fungi are: (1) Phacidium abietis stat. nov. (= Phacidium infestans v. abietis Dearn.), on Abies balsamea, A. concolor, A. grandis, A. lasiocarpa, and Pseudotsuga menziesii; (2) Lophophacidium hyper-boreum Lag. on Picea abies, P. glauca, P. mariana, and P. rubra; (3) Sarcotrichila piniperda (Rehm) Korf on Picea abies, P. glauca, P. mariana, and P. rubra; (4) Sarcotrichila balsameae (Davis) Korf on Abies balsamea, A. concolor, A. lasiocarpa; (5) Phacidium taxicolum Dearn. and House on Taxus brevifolia and T. canadensis; (6) Hemi-phacidium planum (Davis) Korf on Pinus flexilis, P. ponderosa, and P. strobus; and (7) Hemiphacidium convexum (Dearn.) Korf on Pinus rigida. Descriptions are presented; the taxonomy of several of these fungi is discussed. The reported occurence of P. infestans in North America could not be verified. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
