THE MANAGEMENT OF MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE CHAIR TREATMENT

Abstract
Patients (80) with myocardial infarction are reported. Thirty-nine were treated by allowing them to sit in a chair at intervals during the day and 41 were kept at complete bed rest. All were otherwise managed in a like manner including the administration of anticoagulants. The 2 groups were comparable as to age and severity and the incidence of heart failure, thromboembolism, and arrhythmia was similar in each group. There were 3 deaths in the group who were allowed up in a chair and 6 in the group kept in bed. It was concluded that patients with myocardial infarction can be safely allowed up in a chair after shock has been combatted and pain controlled.
