Abstract
The recent A/Asian influenza epidemic offered the opportunity to evaluate various procedures currently employed for laboratory diagnosis. A comparison of (CF) complement fixation and (HI) hemag-glutination-inhibition procedures on serums from 422 patients indicated positive reactions in 89% of the cases when tested in the CF test contrasted with 67% positives in the HI test. It the convalescent serums were collected 10 days after onset, this difference between tests increased to 60%. Isolation attempts in embryonate eggs versus monkey kidney cells on 102 specimens indicated that the A/Asian influenza virus was more readily isolated in the fertile egg than in monkey kidney tissue culture, i.e. 33 positives in eggs contrasted with 3 in tissue culture. Keywords
