Abstract
The behavior of the momentum distribution function is discussed theoretically in the small-signal regime of the free-electron laser (FEL). The distribution function is derived analytically following a series of approximations that reduce this problem to the Klein-Gordon equation. The distribution function changes in nontrivial ways that may play an important role in the efficiency of the FEL.Keywords
