Abstract
Various patterns of sibling relationship may be produced depending on the constellation of the group. In a group with directive-authoritarian leadership, in which each of the members has a fixed role, the allotted sibling functions will be performed, or else the members will adopt sibling roles remembered from their childhood. In a group reduced by a dominating, omnipotent leader or father-figure to a ''mass in miniature'', sibling relationships can no longer be recognized. Individuals do nothing on their own initiative but only carry out the orders of the leader. In a group which has become entirely a collective, identified as a "universal mother", all individuality, even that of the leader, is eliminated. Here, too, no sibling relationships can be recognized, they have been submerged in the all-embracing matrix. Where the group leadership is analytical and restrained or democratic, with changing roles, not only relationships from the individual''s family background and previously experienced sibling patterns will be produced. The members of the group will draw each other into continuously shifting sibling relationships, in which all have the opportunity to change and to mature. This type of group is therefore the most suitable psychotherapeutic setting. Keywords
