Abstract
The paper briefly describes the physical environment of central Tigre; a fuller quantitative and qualitative description of the vegetation follows. A total of 13 natural vegetation types were identified in the area but these have been considerably modified, principally as a result of the activities of man and his domestic animals. The main text is concerned with the vegetation as related to present categories of land use: detailed analyses of a number of sites, including densities, canopy area, ground cover values and species composition are given. An appendix containing more than 200 vernacular names not apparently previously recorded is also included. The species Tristachya bicrinata is reported as a new record for Ethiopia. Keywords
