Abstract
The linear time evolution of axisymmetric perturbations in a time‐dependent Z‐pinch equilibrium is studied using a one‐dimensional linearized initial value code. A critical Lundquist number of the order of 50–100 is found, below which the pinch is stable. This result may account for the enhanced stability of recent deuterium fiber pinch experiments. Keywords
