Implications of Disaccharides in Sticky-Cotton Processing : Honeydew Contamination

Abstract
Trimethylsilyl derivatives of the water-surfactant-soluble components of cotton fibers were analyzed by gas chromatog raphy. Substantial quantities of sucrose and turanose were found on localized areas of some very sticky cottons from the San Joaquin Valley of California. These localized areas of high sugar contamination were primarily responsible for the stickiness of these cottons. The contamination is believed to be honeydew secretions from aphids and/or whiteflies.
