Abstract
This article, which serves to introduce the companion articles in this issue, briefly reviews the impact of cognitive science on the study of figurative language. The intellectual background for (mainly psychological) inquiry into the topic in the 1970s is described, and a synopsis of various cognitive science contributions up to the present is provided. After focusing on the contemporary view of the impact of cognitive science on figurative language as exemplified by the articles in this issue, a final section looks at some of the problems that lie ahead.
